Practice support

At SMC we deliver practical hands on support for practices, which makes the engagement with Clinical Commissioning a smooth process, preventing upheaval in the day to day running of the practice.

At practice level everyone involved should understand that the work to effect the change required by Clinical Commissioning, and the QIPP (Quality, Innovation, Prevention and Productivity) involves the practices, meaning practices and the consortium will fail unless this is right, and everyone understands what the delivery needs to be.

Clinical Commissioning brings together responsibility for clinical decisions and the financial consequences, e.g. referrals, prescribing, management of Long Term Conditions and access. All GPs, Nurses, Allied Healthcare Professionals and Practice staff therefore have arole to play. Each time a patient is referred in to another service, or a prescription has been issued, a commissioning decision has just been made. Practices therefore commission every day in life. Practices therefore need to include regular commissioning reviews within the practice meetings in order to understand and assess the care needs of their registered population, while strongly challenging current activity to ensure appropriateness.
