Think tank calls on chief executives to make quality care pledge

Chief executives of every health service organisation should make a personal commitment to quality, according to the King's Fund think tank.

The request follows news that all foundation trusts in England, as well as all NHS organisations in the East of England, will report on quality of care, as well as how they plan to improve it, as part of their 2009/9 annual reports.

The NHS Next Stage Review proposed the introduction of quality accounts as a tool for publicly recording and monitoring the quality of care being offered to patients in England. The new accounts will be legislated for in the Health Bill currently going through parliament.

Dr Anna Dixon, King's Fund director of policy, said: ‘Boards should receive monthly dashboards that track quality throughout the year in the same way as financial information is monitored and reported.'
